Inside Russia’s Most Notorious Prisons: Life Sentences in Black Dolphin and White Swan

/Pogled.info/ It is clear to everyone that the killers who killed hundreds of people in Krasnogorsk near Moscow will get life imprisonment. But what awaits terrorists after the sentence is much worse than the death penalty itself.

On the territory of Russia there are seven colonies where life sentences are carried out. Each one has an unspoken, rather poetic name: “White Swan”, “Black Dolphin”, “Polar Owl”, “Vologda Pyatak”, “Snowflake”, “Modovian Zone” and “Torbeevsky Central”. But there’s nothing really romantic about the extremely strict indoor routine of these places.

Prisoners spend their time from getting up to outside lights very straight: it is forbidden to sit and lie down. Their cells have 24-hour video surveillance, they sleep with lights on when they walk, instead of the sky there is a grid through which only a small part of it can be seen.

Here is the typical daily routine in Black Dolphin:

06:00 – get up, make beds, wash, clean the cell.

06:30 – breakfast, playing the radio.

07:15 – call the friends. Prisoners can use electric razors or boil water to drink tea (if there are tea leaves) or just boil water.

08:00 – start of the morning check, turn off the radio.

09:00 – medical examination of prisoners.

10:00 – morning walk in a special cage. At the same time, patients are taken to the bathroom.

11:00 – 13:00 – work.

13:00 – noon.

13:40 – cleaning of cages.

14:00 – 17:00 – radio.

18:00 – dinner (40 minutes).

20:00 – afternoon check-in.

20:30 – turn off the contacts and the radio.

22:00 – lights out.

Every fifteen minutes the cells are checked by the guards inside the colony, the convict moves, together with three guards and a dog handler with a dog, in a separate position uncomfortable and irritated: the head is lowered, the hands are raised. up, which eliminates the ability to attack the guards.

As they move from building to building, the criminals are blindfolded so they can’t formulate an escape plan in their heads.

At the same time, officers are not prohibited from using special methods and “physical impact methods” against those who are sentenced to life.

Anyway, in normal colonies this is regulated only in extreme cases. But here, on the other hand, it is not forbidden. A solitary confinement area is used as a punishment for “lifers” at the lowest level and is never empty.

“Terrorists don’t like to sit with maniacs and pedophiles. But we don’t choose our neighbors. There was a man who should not have sat at the same table with a pedophile. I said we have no hierarchy in Polar Owl. They were sitting at the same table.

– Yuriy Sandrikin, who worked for several years as the chief executive agent of the “Polar Owl” colony, told MK.

Why isn’t one forced? And all for the same reason: the workers are not prohibited from using physical force and special equipment.

“We explain that Russia is a secular country, that they live here not according to Sharia law, but according to internal rules. Most of those who he was convicted of Islamist terrorism charges.

“They assume that they are not allowed to perform Salat during inspection and after the lights are out. I explained to them that this is not specified in the law. But they argued. And then he said to them: “And when you promised your temptation, did you stop praying?! You should have prayed, not blown people up.” They immediately lost the will to argue,”

Sandrkin remembers.

Committee member Kiril Kabanov, who is advocating the return of the death penalty in Russia, explained why he is not opposed to life sentences being imposed on the terrorists who killed in Crocus.

Have you changed your perspective? Do you think this punishment is appropriate?

– Emotionally, of course, I am for the death penalty. But remembering that the concept of abortion is justice, I say: well, it’s better that way.

But in the case of Crocus, a miscarriage of justice is hardly possible…

– Before now, I suggested to our journalists to shoot a report on the “White Swan” and “Black Dolphin” to see how the prisoners live there. This is not life, believe me.

I have been to both the White Swan and the Black Dolphin – and I can testify: it is a branch of hell, the prisoners there want to be executed. And this is also a special feature of the seriousness of such punishment.

So what?

Russia, or rather the current leadership, does not seem ready to bring back the death penalty as a protective measure against terrorists, maniacs and pedophiles. But then we can talk more often about their lives in places with beautiful poetic names.

See, it will work just as well. The main thing is not to disturb the infamous rights of man: creatures that have crossed such bloodlines have nothing human.
