The home of serial killer John Wayne Gacy has long been a source of morbid curiosity after it was discovered the depraved killer hid 29 of his victims under his floor.
The House of Horrors in Des Plaines, Illinois was demolished in 1979 and an entirely new home now stands in its place. Still, it could never quite shake off its macabre past.
With the new Netflix documentary Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes arriving on Netflix, viewers have seen snaps from inside the killer’s home at the time of his arrest.
With the programming going into unbearable detail while the killer himself speaks, it’s hard to imagine the exterior facade he played back then – especially in a home this strange and somber.

Seen as a family man who works hard for charity and revels in his part-time job as a clown, visiting poor children in hospital, the revelations about what he was actually doing behind closed doors are sickening.
Zig-zag patterns adorned Gacy’s wall, making for an unsettling sight that stood out against an all-black background. Fairly bizarrely paired with a pool table and tiki bar in the living room, perhaps the two more carefree areas of his home contributed to his deception.

However, there was no escaping the wide variety of sinister clown paintings scattered throughout the house. Many were placed against the dark paneled walls, which seemed to give the impression of a much smaller, enclosed space.
The clowns scowled at visitors to the home – many of whom endured excruciating torture and pain before being brutally murdered.

The chevron patterns, while colorful, did little to break up the creepy decor, and the sights became significantly more chilling when it was revealed that Gacy’s victims were scattered throughout the house.
In the attic where he placed one of his victims, 15-year-old Robert Piest, after killing him in the bedroom so John could “climb into his bed,” the floor was littered with a strange assortment of objects: boxes up to a pair of handcuffs.

Next to Gacy’s small bed, with the dark paneling throughout the walls, hung another creepy clown photo of a pale red-haired entertainer with huge painted lips and a hat staring at the tragic crime scene of Robert.
There was a small radio on Gacy’s bedside table with a box of tissues.
There was even a crazy clown lamp standing there with big eyebrows and arms raised, supporting the lampshade.
After Gacy’s home was demolished, a new three-bedroom, two-bathroom brick home was built less than a decade later in 1986. It was last sold in March 2021 for $395,000.
