It was already possible to work with images in Excel, but lately the possibilities have been interestingly expanded. Insertion was possible so that the image floated above the table cells. Last year, the program took the first step to insert images directly into cells, where the existing values. The feature made it possible PICTURE (IMAGE), thanks to which you insert into the cell link to the file on the Internet.
The new feature then appeared in Excel for Windows, macOS, web, Android and iOS. The spreadsheet supports PNG, JPG/JPEG, WEBP, BMP, GIF, TIFF and ICO formats. The formula looks like this:
=IMAGE(“source”;”caption”;size;height;width)
As can be seen, alternative text is also inserted into the formula. You can also set the size of the inserted image in it. However, you don’t have to use these parameters at all if you don’t want to.
A value of zero. The image fills the cell so that the original aspect ratio is preserved
If you use parameter to determine sizesyou don’t necessarily fill in manually width a height. The parameter for determining the size of the image has four possible numerical values and it depends on which one you choose:
0 – the image fills the cell in such a way that the original aspect ratio is preserved 1 – the image fills the cell completely, i.e. regardless of its own aspect ratio 2 – it retains the original size of the image, which does not necessarily fit in the cell, or, on the contrary, does not fill it completely 3 – custom height and width settings in points
However, uploading local files was not possible, which brings us to the latest news.
Value three. Custom height and width settings in points, in our case it’s 100 × 100 px
New: inserting local images
In the second half of July, Microsoft introduced the Insider program for public testing inserting local images into cells. To do this, you no longer need to write a function in a cell, but reach for the ribbon. Click on Insert | Images | Place in a cell. The image is displayed in the cell in its original aspect ratio and is resized.
If you use classic pasting, e.g. the shortcut Ctrl+V, the image will always be pasted above the cells. However, you can insert an image from the clipboard directly into the cell, you just have to select the correct insertion command in the context menu.
Inserting images into cells is aimed at Excel
The selected images now have a small button on the right side with which you place the floating image in the cell, or vice versa, move the floating image into the cell. You can also use the context menu or ribbon.
Local image embedding should be available in Excel for Windows starting with version 2306 (build 16529.20000) and for macOS starting with version 16.75 (build 23070901). However, I do not have the function available in the Microsoft 365 installation signed in to the Current channel (preview) where version 2307 is located. I see it in another installation of the office suite, which is subscribed to the Beta channel for a change – and it’s version 2308.
The image will keep its aspect ratio and you can easily “peel” it out of the cell again
Either way, the new function should appear relatively soon in stable Excel. The development team is also planning to insert images into cells for Excel for the web, Android and iOS.
