In 2019, in the region, nearly one in five working people worked in a municipality located more than 30 km from their place of residence, according to the latest INSEE publication.
According to INSEE, over the period 2013-2019, the distances traveled by working people to get to their place of work increased in the Grand Est (+1.2 km for the median journey). In particular, the proportion of working people who travel more than 30 km has increased (+1.7 points), while the share of working people who live and work in the same municipality has decreased (-2.2 points).
Three quarters of these long journeys are made by cross-border workers or commuters between two large cities. Thus, near the Luxembourg border, more than one worker in three travels a long distance.
The majority of trips are spread over three main axes: Lorraine (Thionville – Metz – Nancy), Alsace (Haguenau – Strasbourg – Sélestat – Colmar – Mulhouse – Saint-Louis), and Champagne (Reims – Épernay – Châlons-en-Champagne and Reims – Charleville-Mézières – Sedan). Flows to Paris are also significant from the major areas of the region, in particular those of Metz, Nancy, Strasbourg, Reims and Troyes.
