INSEE Census Figures: Demographic Growth in Var and Alpes-Maritimes Between 2015 and 2021

INSEE has published the census figures. Discover the evolution of the population between 2015 and 2021 in the Var and Alpes-Maritimes.

The Sud-Paca region is the only one in France whose demographic growth has not decreased compared to the period 2010-2015, it now has more than 5 million inhabitants according to INSEE. These are the big winners of this ranking… led by the small town of Castellet +5% population to reach 5,285 inhabitants in 2021. Closely followed by Pignans (+3.3%), Forcalqueiret (2.5 %), Nans-les-Pins and Cuers. In terms of population areas, if we compare in cantons, it is Toulon 1 and 4, Solliès-Pont, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and La Crau which are experiencing the greatest demographic growth.

The most populated cities remain Toulon (180,452 inhabitants), La Seyne-sur-Mer (62,763), Fréjus (57,082), Hyères (55,103) and Draguignan (39,745) in the Var.

The big loser is Saint-Tropez which recorded a 3% drop in its population to reach 3,578 inhabitants in 2021. Then come La Roquebrussanne (-2.4%), Carqueiranne (-1%), Cotignac and Cogolin (-0.9%). For the population cantons, we find La Seyne-sur-Mer 1 and Hyères (-0.5% and -0.4%).

Between 2025 and 2021, the Var will experience an increase of 0.7% in the population, i.e. +7,781 inhabitants, compared to the period 2010-2015. This development is mainly due to net migration, because there are fewer births than deaths in the Var.

Alpes-Maritimes

Among the municipalities which are gaining residents, we find Drap in the lead (+2.8%) and Villeneuve-Loubet (2.7%). The middle country is not left out, Saint-Martin-du-Var and Châteauneuf-Grasse gain 2.7% and 2.4% respectively. In terms of cantons, it is Nice 3 (Nice-west, Carros, Gattières) and Nice 7 (Nice-est, Saint-André-de-la-Roche, la Trinité), Cagnes-sur-mer 2 and Antibes 1 who are at the top of the ranking. It is noted that coastal towns are filled with land.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence lost 1.3% of its population, there were 3,183 inhabitants in the village in 2021. Then come Tende, Beausoleil, Eze and Le Tignet (between -1.2% and -1, 1%). For the decreasing cantons, we find Nice 9 and 4 (cantons with a significant part of the city center), Cannes 2 and Antibes 2.

In conclusion, the Alpes-Maritimes department remains almost stable, it gained 3,584 inhabitants between 2015 and 2021 (compared to the period 2010-2015). Its natural balance is zero, that is to say that births are equal to recorded deaths, it is only the migratory balance which increases the population. The department today has 1,095,337 inhabitants.
