The National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) and the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) agreed to carry out registration with facial biometrics and fingerprints, for inmates in different prisons nationwide. This is part of a joint effort to combat crime and evasion of justice.

The measure seeks to identify alleged cases of identity theft, double registration, that is, having two DNI; or the irregular registration of a death certificate. Which means that the prisoner is serving his sentence with a false identity.

According to statistics provided by the INPE, in Peru there are more than 2,000 prisoners who do not have proper identification.

For her part, the head of Reniec commented that starting in May, more than 2,000 inmates will be registered with fingerprints and facial biometrics.

“It is necessary to know if the declared names and surnames correspond, for which you will be registered with your fingerprint and facial biometrics, in order to cross-check with the Reniec database and verify your identity.”

These actions take place within the framework of the fight against crime that Reniec has been fighting. Likewise, in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior (Mininter), it was agreed to cross-check the data of those sentenced with an arrest warrant and ‘The Most Wanted’ to discover if they committed any crime of identity theft.
