Injection of stem cells from placentas donated by women after childbirth could be given to first responders after a nuclear disaster. As a consequence, it would be possible to mitigate the deadly effects of radiation exposure even before they occur.
Exposure to high levels of radiation can damage a person’s ability to make red and white blood cells and platelets. Pluri injection manages to combat these effects, giving the body the chance to recover from exposure.
Initial studies of the injection in animals had promising results. Animals exposed to radiation and then treated with the injection were found to be more than three times more likely to survive than animals that received no treatment after exposure.
The placental donation process has already been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency and the Pharmaceutical Division of the Israel Ministry of Health.
