Not every parent is aware of it, but prolonged screen use can be permanent for children eye damage cause. This is evident from research by the Eye Fund, which was carried out through: Survey, a new podcast series, wants to create more awareness. But there is hope; There are more and more innovative solutions to combat myopia. We discuss three.
Many children suffer from myopia. Myopia can potentially be combated with special lenses, light therapy and apps.
Special glasses and lenses
Currently, myopia is most commonly corrected with single vision glasses, which provide clear vision but do not help slow the progression of myopia. But special glasses are carefully being developed that do this. Take the MiYOSMART glasses, which has a built-in honeycomb pattern. This is how it works: The special pattern in the glasses changes the way light enters the eyes, so that the eyes become less likely to become nearsighted. The clear glass in the glasses ensures that a child can still see clearly and provides the correct correction for vision.
Night lenses, or orthokeratology or Ortho-K lenses, can also correct myopia (nearsightedness) and possibly even slow its progression. The mechanism behind this is not yet fully understood, but it may be related to the way night lenses affect the cornea and adjust the focus of light in the eye.

Red light therapy
In addition to lenses, light therapy could also help. A study conducted in five hospitals in China showed that repeated exposure to low-intensity red light (RLRL) for one year was also effective in slowing the progression of myopia. Children in one treatment group used some type of desk lamp under parental supervision, for no more than 3 minutes, twice a day. The therapy proved effective: axial length growth in the eyes of children was significantly reduced. Other studies also show positive results, so who knows, we may see this therapy appear on the market in a while.
Useful apps
Although many treatments for myopia are still being researched, parents can now take action in an accessible way in the fight against myopia, for example to gain more control over excessive smartphone use. Take the Plano app. This gives parents more control over their children’s smartphone use, by being able to automatically lock the smartphone, set time restrictions, block certain apps and websites, and activate a blue light filter to tackle eye strain and sleep deprivation.
