(HUAWEI) – The company unveiled breakthroughs in intellectual property and innovation at the “Expanding the Innovation Landscape 2022” forum in Shenzhen, China.
On June 8, 2022, Huawei held the third Innovation and Intellectual Property event on its innovation practices. Each year, Huawei has pledged to reinvest more than 10% of its revenue into research and development.
For several years, the company has invested more than 20 billion yuan, 1831,811,349,400 FCFA each year in fundamental research. In 2021, it increased its research and development investment to CNY 142.7 billion, or 22.4% of its total revenue.
Its research and development expenditure and research and development expenditure reached their highest level in the past ten years. In terms of research and development expenditure, Huawei ranked second in the 2021 EU Industrial Research and Development Investment Scorecard. Over the past decade, Huawei’s total investment in research and development exceeded 845 billion yuan, or about 77394 029 512 150 FCFA.
At the ‘Expanding the Innovation Landscape 2022’ forum, Huawei unveiled the ‘Top Ten Inventions’ it considers important inventions for its biennial awards. This competition aims to reward inventions that have the potential to create new product lines, become significant commercial features of existing products, or generate significant value for business and industry.
This year’s award-winning inventions at the Forum range from a viper neural network that dramatically reduces power consumption and circuit area to an “optical iris” that uniquely identifies optical fibers. It is also designed to make it easier for operators to manage network resources, while reducing the time and costs associated with broadband deployment.
Intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which are essential to Huawei’s technological ecosystem, are at the center of competition. According to SONG LIUPING, Chief Legal Officer of Huawei, “We must protect intellectual property at all costs to protect innovation”. “We are excited to license our patents and technologies to share our innovations with the world. This move will help broaden the innovation landscape, advance our industry and advance technology for all,” he said.
Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s DPI division, said the industry strongly recognizes the value of Huawei’s patents, especially in mainstream standards such as mobile technology, Wi-Fi and audio/video codecs. “More than two billion smartphones have been licensed under Huawei’s 4G/5G patents over the past five years. As for cars, about 8 million connected vehicles protected by Huawei patents are delivered to consumers every year.
Huawei held over 110,000 active patents at the end of 2021, covering over 45,000 patent families. The company has granted more patents than any other Chinese company, has the most patent applications filed with the European Patent Office, and ranks fifth among newly granted patents in the United States. Finally, for the fifth consecutive year, Huawei ranked first in the world for patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
For Manuel DESANTES, former Vice-President of the European Patent Office: “The intellectual property system must guarantee that the creations that deserve to be protected deliver real value”, given the many changes in today’s world, where the main thing is no longer the number of patents or inventions filed. That’s why Huawei has put innovation at the center by supporting innovation and always participating in top-level global competitions.
