This dedication ultimately led him to Pomona College, where he assumed the role of Sculpture Technician.In this position, he manages the woodshop and metal shop, while also assisting with classes. However, Martin’s artistic journey wasn’t always a straight line. he initially enrolled at Case Western Reserve University in cleveland as a computer science major. Yet, his artistic inclinations soon prompted him to dual-enroll at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Martin vividly recalls the Institute’s extraordinary four-story building dedicated to crafts: I would walk out with a huge smile on my face. I have never been within such a bubbling and creative space.
Despite enjoying his time at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Martin felt the pull to return to Santa Barbara. I always thought, ‘I don’t really love being in Ohio,’
he said. The COVID-19 pandemic ultimately expedited his return to the West Coast.
Back in Santa Barbara, Martin took a job at Art Essentials. However, he humorously admits that his paychecks were quickly reinvested in art supplies. I need to make some money back.I was spending way too much money there,
Martin explained. This realization led him to set up a makeshift jewelry stand at the Tuesday farmers market, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial venture.
While earning money from his craft, Martin also rekindled his passion for science through astronomy courses at SBCC. It reignited my science brain,
he said. This led him to transfer to Pitzer College, where he gravitated towards geology and archeology, explaining that if astronomy is the study of the stars, then geology is the study of here.
His studies of rock deepened his love of working with the earth. once you fire clay, it’s permanent; but metal, you can always melt it down. How many shapes has the copper in your phone been in before?
Martin’s diverse interests ultimately led him to create his own major: The Art of Life.
martin’s senior thesis was an enterprising experiment involving heating copper to an unprecedented 2,000 degrees to create a 30-pound crystal. His professors initially deemed it impossible, as sculptors typically use bronze, which is more forgiving than copper. On his thesis date, which also happened to be his 24th birthday, Martin transformed his endeavor into a seven-hour performance art
piece.
Spectators gathered to watch Martin throw copper plumbing pipes into the fire, observing the changing colors from red to green to white. He even used a shop vacuum’s nozzle to agitate the volcanic soup,
creating a dramatic display of flames and embers. With only three minutes to pour the liquefied copper into it’s final orb shape,Martin successfully completed his thesis.
The success of his thesis led to an unexpected prospect. A friend from Cate School,who had been following Martin’s experiments,invited him to the Philippines to continue metal casting and 3D printing. This one-month trip evolved into an eight-month journey across Asia, including a month-long wood-fired pottery workshop in kyoto, Japan, and another in India.
Following his travels, Martin visited friends at Scripps College and encountered the Sculpture technician at the time. Despite typically requiring an MFA, the technician believed that Martin’s teaching experience abroad and his groundbreaking thesis made him a strong candidate for the job. He secured the position and now manages two state-of-the-art facilities. His responsibilities include preparing a classroom for 18 students and melting down 100 pounds of aluminum at 1,400 degrees.
