Inmates Showcase Their Talent in Successful Performance of ‘Al Límite’ at Penitentiary Center

Last Friday, September 22, within the framework of the activities to celebrate the Day of Mercy, the play Al limit was performed with great success at the Herrera de La Mancha Penitentiary Center, performed by 10 inmates who are undergoing treatment in the Red Cross project Attention to people with inadequate management of their addiction in prison.

In this project, the therapeutic process is worked on with activities that transversally promote creativity, self-knowledge, improvement in personal abilities and teamwork in inmates deprived of liberty. For this reason, this year the Red Cross has continued with the therapeutic theater workshop and has managed to launch the performance of a new theatrical creation.

The play Al Límite is a text written by inmates serving their sentences at the “Las Palmas I” Penitentiary Center and which won first prize in 2020 in the National Penitentiary Center Theater Works Contest convened by the Ministry of the Interior.

It is a theatrical text that examines the history of men who, for different reasons, transgress the limits without thinking about the consequences of their behavior, finding their lives adrift and searching for the truth that can redirect these situations. It is a work of internal reflection that also addresses the “prisonization” process that occurs once they cross the prison walls.

In order to work on this theater workshop, the Red Cross team has had the generous and invaluable collaboration of the Hestia Association that works in Gran Canaria and that, through its social educator and director of the work in that penitentiary center, Graziano Pellegrini, has managed to have it performed with great acceptance among the inmates and the prison staff who attended the premiere.

Making visible the mismanagement in human behaviors that trigger the commission of crimes and the consequent deprivation of liberty has been the objective pursued on this occasion within the project through this activity. The benefit and improvements in the emotional and personal state of the participants in this activity have once again been visible.
