NEW YORK – Police are searching for an inmate who escaped from Bellevue Hospital early Monday morning, the Department of Corrections said.
Harry Maldonado, 55, escaped from the hospital prison room around 3:50 a.m. still wearing his hospital gown, according to news reports.
The Department of Correction (or DOC) said Maldonado was taken into custody Sept. 23 on charges of attempted robbery, theft and violation of probation.
“Safely monitoring those in our custody is a critical part of our mission and this is extremely disruptive. We take leaks and attempted breakouts very seriously and are investigating exactly how it happened, “DOC Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi told our sister network NBC New York.
“Teams in our Correctional Intelligence Office are working with the New York City Police Department to get this individual back in custody as quickly as possible.”
The department confirmed that a full investigation is underway.
