Inland shipping resumes on Nieuwe Waterweg following leak repairs

The Nieuwe Waterweg in the port of Rotterdam is open to shipping again. The planned work was delayed because a leak had to be fixed.

A leak in part of the new Maasdelta tunnel caused a short circuit. The pumps stopped working as a result. Divers have carried out repair work in the past 24 hours, Rijkswaterstaat reports.

The leak was fixed during the night. This allowed the waterway to be reopened. In the meantime, other activities continue as usual.

The Maasdelta tunnel is under construction and part of the Blankenburg connection. From 2024, it must connect the A20 motorway near Vlaardingen with the A15 near Rozenburg. The tunnel sections of which the tunnel will consist are 185 and 205 meters long.

According to the Port of Rotterdam Authority, tunnel sections of this size have never been built and sunk in the Netherlands before.
