Ajax Amsterdam’s match away to Waalwijk in the Dutch Premier League was canceled in the 84th minute yesterday, Saturday, after Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vassen collided with one of the opponent’s players and fell to the ground.
Wassen fell to the ground after colliding with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey, causing panic among his teammates to rush to seek medical assistance.
The players grabbed curtains and barriers around the goalkeeper to protect him from the eyes of the audience, and tears appeared in the eyes of the players of both teams as the pacemaker was transported to the stadium.
Wassen lay motionless on the ground for several minutes before he was taken on a stretcher outside the field and the two teams entered the locker rooms before the match was canceled following deliberations.
“Etienne was unconscious for a while,” Frank van Mosselveld, director of Waalwijk, told NOS about an hour after the incident.
He added, “Our medical staff began to revive him immediately, but it seemed that it was not a heart problem. He regained consciousness again when he left the field, but he did not know where he was.”
Ajax was leading 3-2 when the match was stopped.
