Injured Journalists on the Road to Recovery: Defying Israeli Targeting and Continuing their Passion

Journalist Christina Assi is trying to engage in social life again, more than two weeks after she was subjected to Israeli targeting while covering the security events taking place in southern Lebanon, which coincided with the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. On Sunday, Christina published a picture of her with the martyr photographer Issam Abdullah, a few hours before the Israeli targeting, noting that he saved her life from death.

Recovery phase

On October 13, media crews in southern Lebanon were subjected to Israeli targeting while covering security events in southern Lebanon, which led to the death of photographer Issam Abdullah from Reuters, and more than three journalists were seriously injured.

Christine (28 years old) was injured in her foot, one day after arriving in Beirut to follow up on military events on the Palestinian border with Agence France-Presse. The arteries and tissues in her foot were torn, and she is still in the hospital in Beirut to complete her treatment.

While doctors are trying to adopt all medical treatment methods to avoid amputating her foot, one of her relatives, lawyer Ayyad Assi, confirms in an exclusive interview with Al-Modon that her treatment phase will be very long and will not end easily, as doctors are trying to treat her injury without resorting to amputating her foot, especially since The main problem is that it will be necessary to sterilize the site of the injury on a daily basis, as the doctors were unable to “contain” this injury for fear of the spread of gangrene.

Christina underwent more than 3 long surgeries, each of which lasted more than 11 continuous hours. Lawyer Assi adds that her health condition has become somewhat stable, but he does not hide that she initially suffered from shock after learning of Essam’s killing, but her psychological state has begun to improve over the past days, as she seeks to communicate daily with her friends. Christina confirmed that Essam saved her life from death, as he insisted on standing in front of her to protect her from any harm.

Continuing passion

In the same context, Al-Modon contacted Al-Jazeera cameraman, Eli Barkhia (50 years old), who also suffered a severe injury in the left shoulder due to the Israeli targeting of media crews in southern Lebanon.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Modon, Barkhiya points out that the duration of treatment has not been determined yet, but it will be long, as he needs to perform many surgeries. The fragments were largely concentrated in his feet, his bones were broken, his ribs were broken, and a fragment settled inside his spleen, but the doctors decided not to remove it because it would not pose any danger to him.

Accordingly, he underwent several surgeries due to injuries to his hands and fingers. He also needs to have some iron pieces installed in his shoulder to repair the fracture, as he is unable to move his shoulder and hand. Regarding the next stage of treatment, Barkhiya pointed out that the nerves in one of his ears had been damaged, making him unable to hear in it, and he would need surgery and medical follow-up in order to address this matter.

It has become certain that media crews will need a long period to recover physically and psychologically at the same time, and it is certain that the Israeli targeting did not succeed in destroying their passion for practicing their profession and conveying the truth to public opinion. In his interview with Al-Modon, Barkhiya confirmed that his health crisis will end and he will return to continuing his work again, and despite his severe injury, he will never give up his passion for the profession, knowing that he participated in documenting various military events taking place in various countries, most notably Syria, Ukraine, and Iraq. , and Libya, but this is the first time he has suffered an injury of this magnitude.
