The medicine reduces blood pressure levels in one dose and maintains the levels for several months. Now, instead of taking daily pills, hypertensive patients will be able to take just one injection approximately once every six months.
High blood pressure is most often treated with oral medications taken once or twice daily. To make life easier for patients, scientists have developed an injectable drug, zilebeziran, which can replace several months of pills with one injection. writes New Atlas. The authors presented the results of the second phase of clinical trials, which showed high efficiency and no side effects.
The effectiveness of zilebesiran was tested among 377 volunteers with moderate to mild symptoms of hypertension – their systolic (upper) blood pressure ranged from 135 to 160 mmHg. Art. Participants were divided into several groups, where the drug was administered in different dosages every three months or six months.
Depending on the dosage, blood pressure levels decreased by 10-15 mmHg. Art., after six months the indicators decreased by 20 mm Hg. Art. It is important to note that in many cases, treatment resulted in a reduction in mean 24-hour systolic blood pressure values below 130 mmHg. The study even confirmed the high safety of zilebeziran. In the future, it is planned that the drug can be administered twice a year or every four months.
Now scientists intend to find out whether the therapeutic effect helps prevent the development of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart attack.
Meanwhile, other researchers have previously presented another injectable drug that quickly and permanently reduces the level of “bad” cholesterol. The treatment even works for an inherited form of high LDL, heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
