Initiatives in Toulouse to Support Earthquake Relief in Morocco

The balance sheet of earthquake in Morocco got heavier again. This Monday evening the latest report showed 2,862 deaths. Faced with disaster, several initiatives are being organized in Toulouse including that of a new collective led by Samir Hajije, elected to the town hall of Toulouse and president of the Cercle Averroès association. He brought together 200 people on Sunday to organize a collection operation which should start Wednesday in Aucamville before perhaps a second one in downtown Toulouse.

“The idea started from saying how we can work jointly from a collective so that there is rather common action rather than isolated actions in every sense of the word, explains Samir Hajije. We anticipate, we have the premises. So from Wednesday, if all goes well, we will start the first harvest in Aucamville. And then, as soon as we have the green light or approval from the local authorities, we will send all these donations. The consulate, with whom we work closely, will receive the list once we have established it in relation to everything we can offer in terms of donations. And it will be submitted to the authorities, the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will be able to validate whether the needs we are proposing are useful or not.”

Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping bags, torches

And then there is Also the association Sans Frontières Daoudi Nisrine which we told you about this Monday morning on France Bleu Occitanie. Without Borders Daoudi Nisrine is one of the very first to have opened a collection point from Monday afternoon In Toulouse. You can go there drop off equipment. But bewarethe association only takes certain very specific donations to avoid wasting: tents, sleeping bags, duvets, flashlights. To give, you must surrender in the premises of the company Novadia energies located south of Toulouse, in the Thibaud industrial zone, at 10 rue Henri Turner, where its manager agreed to lend his hangar. Otherwise you can make a donation to the association’s kitty .

The issue is that to deliver relief in addition to aid of 5 million euros to NGOs, the French government awaits approval from Moroccan authorities. Nisrine Daoudi says she is confident that her association will be able, thanks to its local contacts, to send a first aid quickly.

Diplomatic quarrel and trickle-down aid

For the moment, Morocco did not accept the outstretched hand of France under the background of diplomatic quarrel. Among the explanations, the King of Morocco would not have appreciated that the Quai d’Orsay has moved closer to Algeria in recent years but also its position on the Western Sahara issue. This priority given to diplomacy over humanitarian action is causing a lot of talk and even concern. In the meantime, Toulouse residents are there or will leave.

Houria Tareb already, general secretary 31 of Secours populaire and national secretary in charge of solidarity. She is arrival on site Monday evening with several leaders of the association and will be our guest this Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m.. Et you will be able to react with her to this question: Do you plan to participate in aid to Morocco? And do you find it normal that Morocco does not authorize all countries to come to its aid?

And then, the boss of the company Novadia energies which lent its premises to the Sans Frontières Daoudi Nisrine association. Boujemaa Aït Omar is also preparing to go there. This Toulouse business leader and volunteer of the association is originally from this region of Morocco and he decided to leave on Thursday to provide his help and his knowledge of the field.
