President of the Seniors’ Association calls for alignment with the German legal situation: “There are good talks with Minister of Justice Zadic, she is on the side of the seniors!”
Vienna (OTS) – “Age discrimination is an absolute no-go, but unfortunately it is still common practice – especially in banking. Banks like to describe senior citizens as valued customers. However, when I look at how the older generation is being treated, I can’t believe it and that’s why I’m fighting for improvements.”criticizes Senior Citizens’ Association President Ingrid Korosec.
Elderly people are often disadvantaged, especially when it comes to lending. “Loans are refused despite sufficient collateral, purely because of age. That is incomprehensible to me”, Korosec is annoyed. Many senior citizens would need loans for important renovation work in their houses and apartments, for example for a necessary stair lift or the legally required boiler replacement. “Putting obstacles in the way of older people also means putting stones in their way to lead an independent life”betont Korosec.
Korosec demands adjustment to German legal situation
The legal situation is different in Germany, where a regulation stipulates that loans can also be granted to older people if there is sufficient collateral. “In Austria, on the other hand, according to the law, the loan must be repaid down to the last cent during your lifetime. This drives many older people to German banks via financial intermediaries, where they can borrow money on worse terms but with more flexible terms. The local banks are also losing customers.”explains Korosec.
The President of the Seniors’ Association demands an alignment with the German legal situation. In this regard, she is in close contact with Justice Minister Alma Zadic. “The Minister of Justice has expressly promised me her support and is therefore on the side of the senior citizens. This is an important step in the fight against age discrimination and I will not give up!”concludes Korosec.
