Ingrid and Lorenz Weber celebrate their diamond wedding

“You have now walked a common path for 60 years […] and your marriage is of a special kind,” said the second deputy mayor Monika Ebbinghaus on behalf of Mayor Brosch and District Administrator Marco Voge. They had experienced love, respect, trust and friendship in their marriage.

Lorenz Weber (86) was visibly pleased about the visit and greeted them with the words: “It’s great that you took the time, we are very honoured.” He was aware that only a few married couples today reach such a milestone. They marry later and then usually divorce earlier. Critical tones were quickly followed by a look back at an eventful and fulfilling life.

Getting to know each other on Shrove Monday

The two met on Shrove Monday night 1962 in the former Oberbrügger pub “Dorfschänke” where Ingrid (84) had already been partying for a few hours. Late at night at 3 a.m. Lorenz from another Oberbrügge pub joined them and asked her to dance. “You’re thinking of that early,” said Ingrid with a grin and then did not let the invitation pass. The rest of their lives then seemed to move faster than the invitation to dance. They married after just two years in 1964 and their first son Frank was born just one year later. With the birth of their second son Burkhard in 1967, family happiness was complete.

Memories of a great trip to America

The Webers also looked back on their big trip to America with great pride, as traveling was a rather minor part of their marriage. “Florida, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, but without gambling,” Lorenz Weber gave a brief insight. His self-employment as a tiler, which he had been doing for 24 years until 2002, made it difficult to undertake more extensive trips. But the two also knew how to get involved locally in Oberbrügge. Lorenz Weber has been singing in the Oberbrügge men’s choir for 70 years and Ingrid Weber also sang in the Protestant church choir for a long time. As a handball player, he was involved in sports at TuS Oberbrügge and volunteered with the volunteer fire department. Ingrid Weber liked to spend her time doing handicrafts, “crocheting and knitting socks,” she said.

The couple is still involved today. Ingrid Weber is active in the Oberbrügge women’s aid group and Lorenz Weber is busy with his peace doves. “We’ve never argued about that, because we have the peace doves,” he joked about his animals. He said he had received his first pigeons as a gift from his grandfather when he was nine years old and kept them on a farm in Oberbrügg.

The Weber couple had a lot to say and it was obvious how happy they still are after 60 years of marriage. In the afternoon they wanted to continue to reminisce with family and friends.
