Ingolstadt’s “Little Highline” awarded | B_I galabau

Due to the corona pandemic, the jury, chaired by Philipp Sattler, the managing director of the “Die Grüne Stadt” foundation, met for a digital session to determine the winner of the competition. The concepts submitted were assessed, among other things, according to the criteria of functionality and accessibility, social significance, sustainability, integration into the environment, robustness, services for adapting to climate change, financing and care concept, communication and participation of local residents.

The decision-making body with experts from the areas of municipal green maintenance, landscape architecture, gardening and landscaping and specialist media included Claudia v. Freyberg, Ulmer Verlag; Maya Kohte, German Garden Authority Conference GALK; Wolfgang Gross, Federal Association of Garden, Landscaping and Sports Field Construction BGL; Bernhard v. To honor, Association of German Tree Nurseries BdB; Stephan Lenzen, Association of German Landscape Architects bdla, as well as Carmen Zöttl, Husqvarna Germany.

“The increasing demands on sustainability in combination with often tight budget budgets are an increasing challenge for many municipal green space authorities. Many people who design and maintain public greens do the most valuable work by combining different interests and thereby making the public aware of the value of urban greens. We would like to award concepts that provide this service in an exemplary manner in accordance with our funding criteria with our funding competition, ”explains Regional Marketing Manager Carmen Zöttl.

The decisions of the jury

Of the projects submitted, which represented a wide range of municipal facilities, six were shortlisted and four of them received prizes. The shortlist was the “Theater of the Long Now” project from Stuttgart and “Standardized street tree concepts for urban, dense residential streets” from the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. “With the large number of projects that were able to convince individually as sustainable green spaces in the face of climate change, it was not easy for us to choose a winner,” says Philipp Sattler.

1st place: “Little-Highline” of the garden department of the city of Ingolstadt
The green concept connects two bridges built next to each other, consisting of one
Pedestrian or cyclist footbridge and a former railway bridge. The designers were inspired by New York’s ‘High Line’ Park, a former elevated railway line converted into a green corridor. The ‘Little Highline’ in Ingolstadt stretches across a four-lane road and acts as an important green link between the residential areas, parks and sports facilities on both sides. The jury was particularly impressed by the unconventional and yet highly functional design of the green corridor when it comes to the interaction between innovation and participation. Your functionality, aesthetics and
Their ecological value in connection with a well thought-out care concept make the ‘Little Highline’ from Ingolstadt a role model that exemplifies the goals of the Husqvarna funding competition. “

2nd place: “Green corridor parallel to the track” of the garden, cemetery and forest office of the city of Stuttgart
“The well thought-out design of the area enables an exemplary combination of different functions: from habitats for strictly protected lizards to noise protection and recreational areas for residents in the adjacent residential area to aesthetic contributions, the green area fulfills a multitude of tasks. Especially with regard to climate change and densification, a place arose in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt that is as robust as it is poetic and represents a green infrastructure of the 21st century in the best sense of the word and can be considered exemplary for many similar areas in Germany. “

3rd place: “New landscapes in the Neckarbogen” at the BUGA Heilbronn 2019
“As a large-scale construction project that has been planned for many years and implemented with a large budget, it is to be assessed as ‘out of competition’ with regard to measures taken by municipal green space authorities. The jury recognized the overall positive overall effect of the show, which has set new standards in terms of urban planning, design and ecology through topics such as the integration of inner-city living, the conversion of industrial sites or the upgrading of the riverbanks. “

4th place: “From the cemetery to the park and teaching garden” of the Ev. Cemetery Association Berlin Stadtmitte
“For the jury, the work represents an exemplary approach to inner-city cemetery areas that are no longer needed for burials. In times of changing burial rites, these areas with their old trees and high biodiversity form a valuable resource. As urban oases, they also help cool down cities during the increasingly hot summers. In the ‘New Jacobi Friedhof’, a ‘park and teaching garden’ also brings children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds closer to the value of green living spaces. “

First place is endowed with 10,000 euros, places two to four win a material prize from Husqvarna, places five to tenth a specialist book from Ulmer Verlag. The prizes will be ceremoniously awarded at the Federal Congress of Green Associations, which will take place at the end of May at the BUGA 2021 in Erfurt.
