Ingenuity’s Historic Flight to Mars: First Helicopter Flight to Another Planet

On April 19, 2021, “Ingenuity” made a flight to Mars, which was the first helicopter flight to another planet in history. The small helicopter weighed only 1.8 kilograms and runs on four lithium batteries. It arrived on Mars with the self-propelled robot “Perseverance”.

Initially, the helicopter was only supposed to be used for five tests to prove that flight in the Martian atmosphere was possible, but it ended up making 72 flights. The small aircraft acted as an aerial scout for the self-propelled robot.

Ingenuity’s longevity exceeded all expectations.
