ING Records Profit of 1.98 Billion Euros in Q3, Doubles from Previous Year

ING, the largest bank in our country, recorded a profit of 1.98 billion euros in the third quarter. According to the bank, this was partly due to good results from the interest rate policy.

This is evident from figures for the third quarter, which the bank released on Thursday. Profit has doubled compared to a year earlier, when it remained at 979 million euros.

Banks have received a lot of criticism lately because their savings interest rates remain relatively low. The banks themselves now receive 4 percent interest when they deposit money with the European Central Bank (ECB). But the interest that customers receive on their savings at Dutch banks is often around 1.5 percent.

Many people find such a large interest rate difference unfair, and there is also criticism from politicians. Supervisor ACM announced this week that it is investigating whether there is enough competition in the Dutch savings market. ING says it is aware of the social debate about interest rates.

At the same time as the quarterly figures, the bank also announced that it will buy back shares worth 2.5 billion euros. Companies often do this as a gesture towards shareholders.
