Suddenly having access to the bank account of a complete stranger, it happened to an account holder at ING. After logging in with facial recognition in the bank’s app, it ended up at someone else’s account. That reported the FD.
“To my great surprise, I saw all the financial data of this person there,” the account manager told the newspaper. “I could even change his details or cancel the account. It felt very uncomfortable that such a thing was possible, especially because others could also potentially access my account in this way.”
‘Our mistake’
The account holder immediately presented the situation to ING. There was a system error, the bank said. “The fault was ours, not the facial recognition.”
ING emphasizes that this is a very exceptional and unique situation. “Because the account holder came to us, we were able to immediately take appropriate measures,” a spokesperson told NOS. “We are actually only happy when customers report these situations, we learn from that.”
More notifications
The bank told the FD that it had informed the account holders of what went wrong, but they denied this. ING said it did contact you after the article was published. The supervisory authority for the Financial Markets also said it had not been informed.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority told the newspaper that reports of similar incidents are often received. “It occasionally happens that incorrect customer data appears. This is not limited to banks, but it can also happen to a pension insurer, for example,” a spokesperson told the FD.
