Information will be provided on “virus-free” restaurants via the Kakao platform

SEOUL, 02 Feb. (Yonhap) – South Korea on Tuesday said it had partnered with the operator of the country’s leading messaging app, Kakao Corp., to provide local consumers with restaurant information that strictly follows health guidelines to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19).

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the service points to restaurant locations in which employees wear protective masks at all times and provide separate utensils for communal dishes and pots.

Kakao operates South Korea’s most popular mobile messaging app, KakaoTalk, as well as the Daum search engine.

Last year, 23,467 restaurants across the country were designated as safe establishments.

Sharing a dish provided simultaneously for a group is common practice in Korean culinary culture, but the pandemic has caused people to opt for separate dishes.

The ministry plans to increase the number of restaurants that follow the health directive.

The country launched a similar service with the country’s leading online portal operator, Naver Corp., last year.

South Korea reported 336 additional new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 78,844.
