It’s storming around Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman after the team’s weak start to the season. The 0-3 loss at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League premiere has been followed by a loss of points against Granada (1-1) and Cadiz (0-0) in the league game.
In the Cadiz match, Koeman was also sent off after protesting against a verdict, which led to a two-match suspension.
Koeman’s vulnerable position has led to speculation about who can replace the Dutchman on the coaching staff, where Belgian national team captain Roberto Martinez has been mentioned as an alternative. Goal.com now reports that the Barcelona management has made initial contact with Martinez and that the club is ready to fire Koeman.
However, Martinez first wants to lead Belgium in the upcoming Nations League play-offs on October 7 and 10 before leaving the league captaincy, according to Goal.com. Barcelona should also be willing to wait a few more weeks to get their first choice.
Should Barça fail with Martinez, club legend Xavi is an alternative as the new coach after Koeman, whose contract expires next summer.
