Mexico City. The informal economy in Mexico reached 5.69 trillion pesos, according to the results of the Quarterly Informal Economy Measurements by Federal Entity (MEITEF) at 2018 prices, which is equivalent to around 23 percent of the total economy.
According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the gross added value (GVA) of the informal economy reached 5.69 trillion pesos, which represented a real increase of 3.8 percent at an annual rate.
By federal entity, the largest increases were observed in Campeche, with 25 percent; Quintana Roo, 16 percent; Sinaloa, 13.6; Nayarit, 7.9; and Puebla, with 7.3 percent.
Inegi explained that Mexico’s informal economy is made up of the informal sector, which includes all economic activities carried out by companies without legal personality owned by households, and other forms of informality, where workers who work in formal economic units do not have social security or social benefits, such as vacations, Christmas bonuses, severance pay, among others.
The informal sector’s GVA increased 5.9 percent at an annual rate and represented 56.3 percent of the informal economy. Campeche, Quintana Roo, Querétaro, Aguascalientes and Yucatán were the countries with the highest annual increase during January-March 2024.
In the first quarter, the GVA of other forms of informality accounted for 43.7 percent of the informal economy and grew 1.4 percent at an annual rate. The entities that stood out for their upward variation in this sector of the economy were Sinaloa, with 19.5 percent; Nayarit, 7.8 percent; Quintana Roo, 7.6 percent; Campeche, 6.5 percent; and Puebla, with 5.7 percent.
