Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for inter-institutional relations and foresight, will inform diplomats about the negotiations on the Northern Ireland Protocol, according to Politico.
Three diplomats told Playbook that Šefčovič will ask EU countries how they think they should react if Johnson triggers Article 16.
“There is a consensus that London has gone too far,” said one diplomat.
“But we are not going to talk about a sanctions package at today’s meeting,” he added.
Officials in Brussels are increasingly convinced that the UK will trigger Article 16 of the Brexit deal as early as next week.
Market reaction
GBP / USD is unimpressed by the renewed Brexit headlines and is hovering almost unchanged around the 1.3550 mark over the course of the day.
