INFO EUROPE 1 – Covid: total partial unemployment extended until 2021 for certain sectors

Times are infinitely hard for the sectors most affected by the current crisis, such as tourism, events, sport and culture. To reduce the impact of the coronavirus, the government had undertaken to cover 100% of partial unemployment until December 31, a device that allows employees to receive 84% of their net salary at no cost to the company. According to information from Europe 1, the device will be extended at least until January 31.

Device maintained until March?

According to a source close to the Minister of the Economy, there is no question of removing 100% support for partial unemployment for administratively closed sectors. This primarily targets bars, restaurants but also sports halls, establishments closed at least until January 20. This also concerns sectors that are open but hit hard by ricochet, such as events, air travel or even hotels.

The maintenance of the partial unemployment scheme is recorded behind the scenes until January 31. But the sectors concerned would like to go further: for example, tourism companies are demanding its maintenance at least until the end of March. During the two weeks of Christmas, tour operators do not expect to make more than a third of their turnover from last year.

The expected Borne arbitration

And the deconfinement of these sectors will not coincide with an immediate resumption of activity, which will take time. On the other hand, such a business support system is expensive and the arbitrations are therefore very tense. The Minister of Labor, Élisabeth Borne, should settle this sensitive issue in the coming days.
