Influx of Invalid Ballots Raises Concern in Local Elections

And these local elections the number of invalid ballots peaks. The “specialty” of this edition will be the vote for the municipal council – people en masse filled in this ballot wrongly, marking a preference without first filling in which party list they preferred. In places, the share of invalid votes exceeds 20%.

The vote in Sliven is very telling. Thus, with 98% of the protocols processed in the vote for mayor, the invalid ballots are 1,588 out of 35,948 or 4.5% of the votes. In the vote for municipal councilors, however, the counted invalid ballots were 7,432 out of 35,188 who voted for this type of election. That makes 21% invalid ballots.

The picture is similar in other municipalities of the country. IN Godech with 100% processed protocols, invalid votes for mayor are 62 out of 2,591 – 2.4%, but for municipal council invalid ballots jump to 541 out of 2,567 – again 21%.
IN Bansko with 99.67% of the protocols processed, 270 out of 7,109 or 3.8% ballots for mayor, invalid votes for municipal council are 1,071 – 15%.

IN Gorna Oryahovitsa with 100% processed protocols and 20,744 people voting for mayor, there were 619 or 2.9% invalid ballots. However, the invalid votes for municipal council lists are 2,541 or 16.1%.

There are many invalid voices and in Plovdiv. With 59.2% of the protocols processed, the invalid votes for mayor were 1,272 with 54,265 people voting or 2.3%. The invalid votes for the municipal council were 5,700 with 52,865 voters – nearly 11%.
