Influenza season could be severe, warns European Center for Disease Prevention and Control: Europa FM

The warning comes from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control: the coming flu season could be severe, and this added to the COVID-19 pandemic risks causing “serious consequences” through additional pressure on the health system. In Romania, the Influenza Vaccination Campaign has not started yet.

Specialists from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control say that the predominant flu strain this year, A (H3N2), affects the elderly more and is associated with a lower effectiveness of the flu vaccine.

There are already indications, experts say, that the coming flu season could be severe. For the flu season 2021-2022, in Romania, the Ministry of Health ordered 2 million doses of influenza vaccine. These have not yet reached the family doctors.

Last year, the flu epidemic was almost non-existent due to anti-vaccine protection measures, but also a record influenza vaccination in Romania: almost 3 million people. Doctor Gindrovel Dumitra.

Vaccination, both anti-influenza and anti-COVID-19, provides protection against severe forms of the disease, doctors point out.
