The media watchdog checked the online videos of Nena Schuurmans and Sam Van Denderen on their Instagram and Tiktok channels between October 9 and 22, 2023. Schuurmans is best known for her videos about skin care. She has around 70,000 followers on Tiktok. Van Denderen makes videos about fashion and make-up and has 25,000 followers on the same channel.

Both influencers were previously contacted by the VRM research cell because advertising in their videos was not easily recognizable as such. The VRM requires, among other things, that the word “advertisement” or “publicity” appears at the beginning of the description and that the brand, product or service is tagged.

The VRM will limit it to a warning for the time being, because the regulations are fairly new for content creators, influencers and vloggers. It was also the first time that such an infringement was found at Schuurmans and Van Denderen.

Earlier this year, the regulator imposed a fine on Sarah Puttemans for similar facts. Puttemans had previously been warned for violating the rules regarding advertising.
