Influencers harvest shitstorm for baby name

Hate and hate speech on the Internet is also a problem for young parents from the USA. The photo is an archive photo dated January 20, 2022.

The naming is not only difficult for expectant parents, but apparently also a sensitive issue for their followers: an influencer couple from the USA now had to endure a shitstorm because of their choice of name.

Whether Sunshine, Audio Science or Angel Princess: the parents choose the names of their children. The rules in the USA are that simple. So the United States is also the land of unlimited possibilities when it comes to naming – at least that could be assumed.

A prominent couple of parents from the USA now had to accept severe criticism for the choice of their baby’s name. In the end, the criticism was so irrelevant that supposedly even death threats fluttered into the house.

USA: Influencer couple is attacked for naming

The victims of the baiting are Jasmine Chiswell and Maverick McNeilly. The two are a couple, known as influencers on Tiktok and Instagram. The two had an addition to the family in January 2022, but they only revealed their son’s name on social media in mid-February 2022 – a mistake, as it turned out.

“His name is Midnight (German: midnight)”, the two revealed in one of their numerous videos. There was massive incomprehension in the comment columns. “Is that a joke?” asks one of her followers. Another follower writes: “You’re kidding me, Jasmine?!” Many more taunts followed.

Three days after the public announcement of her son’s name, Jasmine Chiswell spoke up and described the initial comments as “barbaric”. So far, however, there is no evidence that her partner Maverick McNeilly really received death threats.

Midnight: Positive news about the choice of name now predominates

An Instagram user is at least a little more differentiated: “You are beautiful, your son is adorable. Such a lovely family. But: This baby’s name sounds like a dog. The main thing is that you are happy with it.”

In the meantime, the situation in the comment columns has relaxed again and the positive news predominates. For example, the top comment “Beautiful name” received 8500 likes.

Naming: This is the legal situation in Germany

Incidentally, in Germany the laws on naming are a little stricter. In this country, not every name is approved by the registry office. For example, not if the name endangers the well-being of the child. In such a case, the registry office refuses entry in the birth register.

Contrary to the widespread assumption that a child’s name must be able to be clearly assigned to a gender, a document from the Bundestag states: “The assignment of gender-neutral names is possible, a middle name identifying the gender is not absolutely necessary.” (jm)
