Cenat, who has more than four million followers on YouTube and 6.5 million on Twitch, promised to give away free electronics such as game consoles and a new PlayStation to people who turned out in Union Square in New York City on Friday.

Many did – and the crowd quickly got out of control. Video images show people running and hanging on to a car at high speed, and according to the police, fireworks were thrown, among other things, both at the police and others in the crowd.

A total of 65 people have been arrested following the incident – 30 of them minors, writes the news agency AP.

Now Cenat is charged with incitement to riots and for holding an event without permission. According to AP News, he will appear in court on August 18.

The influencer was released from police custody on Saturday, writes the news agency.

– Our children cannot be raised by social media, says New York’s mayor Eric Adams during a press conference on Saturday.

According to the mayor, the chaos at Union Square could have ended in loss of life.

A spokesperson for AMS, which represents Kai Cenat and a group of other influencers, says the distribution in the park was initiated to show that Cenat appreciates his fans.

– We have arranged several fan meetings and video shoots in the past, but we have never experienced anything close to what happened yesterday, says the representative to AP.

– We recognize that our audience and our influence are growing, and with that also comes greater responsibility. We are sorry for the disturbances that affected innocent people and businesses, and we do not accept such behaviour, concludes the representative.
