Today Nikolay Denkov is in Brussels, where a meeting of the leaders of the EU countries is taking place.

One of the reasons why he (Delyan Peevski, b.a.) is necessary is that other parties that could have joined this process distanced themselves completely – I mean BSP and “There is such a people”. So at some point it turned out that there was no alternative – if you want to make the changes, the traffic police must be involved. No advanced math needed, it’s simple arithmetic. That’s what it says in an interview for the “Euroactive” website Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov. His speech was in response to a question “What is the influence of the MP from DPS Delyan Peevski in politics?”
“What is important for us is who supports the government to implement its program and legal changes. They are producing results – the EC has removed the monitoring mechanism, we are the first in the world to progress in the area of the rule of law. This shows that the results of these efforts are visible at the international level. For me, it is very important that we complete these processes so that the Bulgarian citizens feel them as early as next year. This is the goal after all – to see that the justice system works. For a part of these changes, Peevski is necessary. We are talking about the changes in the Constitution, about some of the regulators,” the Prime Minister explained.
Denkov notes that in recent weeks, GERB leader Boyko Borisov and Delyan Peevski have been working in sync. “Even the attacks against me are now in sync. So these questions of what is the influence and why is it, you have to ask them,” he points out.
Anyone who underestimates the risk of the derogation is playing with fire
“Anyone who underestimates the risks that the derogation outside the agreed terms is creating, playing with fire,” is Denkov’s opinion on the Lukoil case. He explains that such a move could create a crisis in the fuel market. “Yes, the market is open, maybe after a while it will be able to recover through imports , maybe in time the refinery will also resume, but no one has done this exercise to know how much it costs and how long it will take. From there, with all the political and economic instability – because it’s a problem for people, prices can go up significantly. It’s also a problem for business. We need aviation fuel, for example, for the planes,” Denkov explains.
According to Denkov, the deadline for extending Lukoil is different, and quick cancellation of the derogation is impossible
He does not rule out the possibility that someone will take advantage of the pressure to artificially create problems on the fuel market, as there is no shortage of such temptations. “In the current situation, every three days a tanker with Russian oil stops in the port of Rosenets, which reaches there from the port of Novorossiysk in less than a day.. But if you need to provide oil from outside the Black Sea region, a tanker comes in a minimum of 15 days, it could be 20-25.And if there is a problem in the Bosphorus, as it has been, it may have to wait another 15-20 days.
“So, if there is no preliminary preparation with the conclusion of contracts, provision of transport, of additional reserves – because the reserves in Lukoil Neftohim are only for 10 days, you create a very real risk, even without someone else’s desire, to leave the refinery without oil with all the resulting consequences,” the Prime Minister explains
For Schengen to rely on diplomacy until the last moment
When asked whether Bulgaria should harden its tone towards the EC if it is not allowed into Schengen, the prime minister replied that all means of diplomacy should be used. “Perhaps because I come from the natural sciences, where logic is everything, I prefer first to imagine the logical arguments, to hear the objections, to enter into a discussion and this happens. I had the opportunity in interviews with Austrian public media to hear these arguments from the Austrian society. The attitude in Austria towards the Bulgarians is quite positive and that helps. There is no political risk of entering a hostile environment,” clarifies Nikolay Denkov.
Nehammer to Denkov: Schengen cannot be expanded before it is reformed
Asked what percentage is the chance of Bulgaria entering Schengen in December, he answered: “I don’t want to talk with percentages, but the chances of a positive development are significantly above zero, as presented by the media.”
The price of the new units at the Kozloduy NPP will be lower than the one discussed
As a big plus of the new blocks, he points to their ability to change their power in a significant range relatively quickly. “This is very important when renewable energy sources have to be compensated. The capacity of each of the new units is 1150 MW and can be reduced to 700 megawatts,” he added.
Bulgaria does not want confrontation with Russia, but defends its interests
Asked what the strengthening of the coast guard’s capacity with missiles necessitates, Denkov notes that Bulgaria does not want a confrontation with anyone in the Black Sea. “However, the fact is that Russia imposed a ban on shipping in certain corridors. After that, for a very long period of time, it declared that it would conduct exercises in our economic waters. In these economic waters, among other things, the natural gas deposits are located , which we want to investigate. So here there is serious pressure from Russia towards interests that Bulgaria has every legal right to defend,” explains the prime minister.
According to him, the right steps are better technical and personnel provision of the Bulgarian defense forces and full integration with the neighboring NATO member countries – Romania, Poland. “The rockets appear in this context. There is a procedure, we just have to ensure the safety of the coasts. Some of them were fired from the sea side, we don’t want this to happen again,” says Nikolay Denkov.
