Inflation in practice: An expensive camping holiday

Jam

Jam and honey have become 10 percent more expensive since last summer. That is more than the average for foodstuffs in the Netherlands. Food prices all over the world have been rising since last year. On average, groceries abroad are more than 7 percent more expensive than a year earlier.

Airline tickets, on the other hand, are still somewhat cheaper than before last summer (-0.6 percent), but that is mainly due to the seasonal pattern. Prices rise in the spring, peak in the summer and fall again towards the autumn.

All in all, this camping holiday has become 5.3 percent more expensive since last summer. As far as activities described in previous episodes are concerned, Christmas shopping in particular stands out, boosted by the price of petrol – refueling has become 30 percent more expensive since last May. And because DIY materials, floors, furniture, bread and coffee also continue to increase in price, you now also spend more than 9 percent more on the moving day than ten months ago.

It should be noted that the figures for the basket as a whole may give a distorted picture, because this section follows the weighting of Statistics Netherlands. When compiling the total inflation basket, the statistical office gives each product a certain weight, depending on how heavily it counts in the annual expenditure. So it may be that the jam weighs relatively heavily, while in reality it is a much smaller expense than a plane ticket.
