Inflation in Estonia decreases to 11.3% in May, with food prices driving annual increase

Annual inflation in Estonia decreased to 11.3% in May, compared to 13.5% in the previous month, according to the published data of the Statistics Department.

Compared to the fifth month of last year, the prices of goods in Estonia increased by 11.1%, while the prices of services increased by 11.5%.

Statisticians pointed out that in comparison to the year, consumer prices in Estonia were most affected by the increase in the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages in May, which accounted for almost two fifths of the total increase.

In May, meat and meat products in Estonia were 21.2% more expensive than a year ago, flour, cereals and cereal products became 23.8% more expensive, fresh fruits and berries became more expensive by 26.8% and the price of fresh vegetables increased by 38.4 %, meanwhile, fresh fish has become 19.7% cheaper.

Gasoline prices in Estonia in May were 12.9% lower than a year ago, diesel became 19.3% cheaper and gas prices fell by 43.2%.

The last time annual inflation did not exceed 11.3% was last January, when it was also 11.3%.

Compared to April, consumer prices in Estonia remained stable last month, following 2% monthly inflation in the previous month. During the month, changes in prices related to transport had the greatest impact on consumer price changes, with the price of automobile fuel decreasing by 2% and the price of airplane tickets purchased in May decreasing by 12%.
