In the last year, the “bovine meat basket” measured by INDEC showed interannual inflation of 72.6% versus 118.5% for the average for food and non-alcoholic beverages.

At the beginning of the 70s, during his third term, General Perón released his famous phrase “salaries go up the stairs and prices go up the elevator” showing his concern to see that real inflation soared, despite the controls of prices, and the blame lay with the “imported inflation” of the first oil shock and with the oligopolies.
It is already known that inflation is not a problem that we Argentines have been able to solve, but rather it has been getting worse and in its path it not only harms wage earners, as the former president said, but also generates “delays” in some production chains that will be free of charge. it is free because it is paid for with economic losses in the different links of the chain that will later become a shortage of supply and the “magic” of what is accessible will become more of a “nightmare” for consumers. It’s just a matter of time
A few days ago, INDEC reported that annual inflation for June was 6.0% per month, while the interannual rate was 115.6%. The indicator includes a series of goods and services that do not necessarily correspond to the consumption basket of the different Argentine families. In this regard, it is feasible to note that last month in the inflationary ranking was food, a large part of which –according to the basket measured by INDEC– has prices regulated by the Ministry of Commerce.
Among the intervened foods, there is one in particular that has a significant weighting in the food inflation indicator and that has been punished both by official policy and by the current situation. We are talking about beef.
In the last year, the “bovine meat basket” measured by INDEC (which includes roast, shoulder, rump, rump, and minced meat) showed year-on-year inflation of 72.6% versus 118.5% for the average of non-food and beverages. alcoholic beverages in shops and supermarkets in the city of Buenos Aires (CABA-GBA).
That is to say: beef has been climbing the ladder with an annual delay of almost 46 points compared to the general average of food that travels in the elevator, harming livestock producers who have been losing silently and stoically compared to other sectors of the economy.
The “backward” of food in general and of bovine meat in particular made it possible to offset the significant increases registered in the areas of communications, health, public services and home maintenance. While some lose, others win in inflationary contexts.
The point is that this “delay” is not free because it is paid for with economic losses in the different links of the meat chain, which, in the case of breeding stock, has the peculiarity that the “machine” that generates calves is it can be sold as a consumer good when the numbers do not give and liquidity is required to be able to pay the bills.
