Bringing Art to the Streets: Sopro Festival Reimagines Public Art with Pop-Inspired Identity
Sopro, a cutting-edge contemporary art festival, is turning heads with its accessible and engaging ethos. The festival, known for installing impressive inflatable structures alongside traditional artworks, aims to break down barriers between art and the general public.
One crucial component of Sopro’s success lies in its bold, instantly recognizable branding. Developed by the design studio Monga, the festival’s identity draws heavily from the playful spirit of pop art, transporting vibrant, eye-catching visuals into urban landscapes. The studio aimed for an approach that was both "approachable and sophisticated," according to Michel Refatti, Monga’s co-founder.
"The design strikes a balance between being approachable and sophisticated, complementing the festival’s concept of art that’s accessible for everyone,” Refatti said.
By combining pop-art aesthetics with everyday urban elements, Monga created large-scale installations that become part of the city’s fabric. This innovative approach not only creates a unique cultural experience but also redefines the traditional notion of a gallery space.
"This combination makes Sopro a unique project that really redefines the use and possibilities of public space and the concept of a gallery all together,” says Refatti.
The team’s creative process involved an in-depth exploration of volume, colour, and materials – essential elements of pop art.
“Our creative process involved studies of volume, colour, and materials to convey the idea of pop art that is simple and accessible," explains Mateus. " "The result is an identity that connects directly with the urban space, providing a unique and inclusive cultural experience.”
Sopro’s commitment to democratizing the art experience is further emphasized by its free outdoor viewings. By making contemporary art accessible to everyone, the festival not only fosters engagement but also inspires a deeper appreciation for creativity within the community. Think of it as a free, open-air museum that transforms city streets into vibrant art galleries.
