Giovanni Brusca is one of the Italian mafia’s most notorious killers. The 64-year-old has now been released after serving a sentence of 25 years in prison.
Brusca was a key figure in the Sicilian Cosa Nostra mafia. Among his many crimes is the murder of the famous mafia hunter and judge Giovanni Falcone in 1992.
Falcone’s spouse and three bodyguards were also killed when the car they were in was detonated by a remote-controlled bomb detonated by Brusca.
The news of the release has provoked strong reactions.
“After 29 years, we have still not been told the truth about the massacre, while Giovanni Brusca, the man who destroyed my family, is free,” the widow of one of the bodyguards told the newspaper La Repubblica.
Brsuca has confessed to being involved in over a hundred murders. One of the most brutal was the murder of a 12-year-old boy who had been abducted, in retaliation for his father’s cooperation with the authorities.
After being held captive for two years, the boy was strangled and the body thrown into a container of acid.
Brusca was released after testifying against Cosa Nostra while in prison.
