Inevitable outbreak. When to expect a new wave of COVID

Will the world be covered by a new wave of pandemic?

In the week from 16 to 22 August, more than 4.5 million new cases of COVID-19 infection were detected in the world, and more than 68 thousand patients became victims of coronavirus infection.

Humanity has three months to prepare for a new wave of COVID-19, said the head of the WHO, Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus.

Despite the fact that the situation with new cases of infection has stabilized against the background of a two-month increase, the incidence and mortality rate from COVID-19, as noted by Tedros Ghebreyesus, remains quite high in some countries.

How will the coronavirus pandemic develop further?

The timing of the new wave

“As long as this virus circulates anywhere, it poses a threat everywhere … The next three months represent a critical period for the formation of pandemic preparedness and response,” – said Gebreyesus.

The representative of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, at a WHO briefing recalled that COVID-19 is not a one-time disaster, but due to underfunding, humanity is vulnerable in a protracted pandemic.

“What is clear is that global health security is dangerously underfunded. Therefore, we are vulnerable to a protracted COVID-19 pandemic with recurring waves affecting all countries, and we are also vulnerable to future pandemics. We can fix that,” Shanmugaratnam said.

A month ago, WHO said that due to the spread of the Delta strain, all achievements in the fight against coronavirus may be leveled.

At the same time, the WHO says that all hypotheses about the origin of the coronavirus remain valid. In particular, we are talking about the artificial creation of a virus. WHO experts emphasize that the window of opportunity for research into the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is quickly closing, and some research may soon become impossible.

Situation in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the incidence of coronavirus has sharply increased in recent days. Over the past day, it was found in 1581 people, 45 deaths were recorded, 1269 patients recovered. Although a little over 700 infected were found a day earlier.

In total, for the entire time of the pandemic in Ukraine, 2,278,171 people fell ill, of which 2,203,429 recovered, deaths – 53,566.

Adaptive quarantine continues to operate in the country, all regions are in the green zone.

Third vaccination

Scientists suggest that a third dose of vaccine may be needed to counter the coronavirus.

For example, in Brazil, from September 15, they will begin to vaccinate people with weakened immunity, as well as citizens over 80 years old, with the third (booster) doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Moreover, the Pfizer vaccine will be used as an additional dose.

This decision was made due to the spread of the Delta strain and the need to strengthen the protection of the most unprotected people.

Earlier in Israel, they announced the high effectiveness of the third dose of the coronavirus vaccine. With 1.1 million Israelis who received the third vaccination, the coronavirus was detected in 2,790 people (0.2% of all those vaccinated with the booster dose). At the same time, 187 people (0.01%) were hospitalized. In 88 people (0.008%) the disease was severe.

According to Reuters, citing data from the Israeli Ministry of Health, among people aged 60 and older, protection from infection, which is provided 10 days after the third dose, was four times higher than after two vaccinations. The third injection for people aged 60 years and older provided five to six times more powerful protection against serious illness and hospitalization in 10 days.

In late July, even Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog received the third dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. With the help of a booster vaccine, the country wants to prevent the spread of the Delta strain of coronavirus.
