ROMA – If there is one thing on which neoliberalism and authoritarianism win hands down, it is the ability to influence “common sense”, that is, the glasses with which we look at things. The first has been doing it for thirty years, the second – authoritarianism – is doing it today. Without changing common sense, argues the Inequality and Diversity Forum since he was born, there has been no match for democracy or for social justice.
The disaster in the distribution of wealth and access to services. It’s true: we talk about inequalities more than we did yesterday. In fact, how can we deny the avalanche in the distribution of wealth and access to fundamental services? But the anxiety of showing the “merit“making money, as well as contempt for what is”public”, and then perceive the “freedom” only as a possibility of leaving and the spread of the idea that there is no alternative… here: all this pushes women and men to think that giving all the powers to a Trump or a Musk, even giving up a bit of ” democratic freedoms”, is all in all the “lesser evil”.
The challenge with the support of art. Not “an impromptu commercial” but a real dispute for common sense. And here art appears as a fundamental tool in this dispute. It always has been, because it triggers emotions, opens fractures in the way of seeing things. Even today, in the universe of contemporary arts, activists and movements are trying, both small and large. But it takes a leap.
The dispute with hegemonic common sense. Il Inequality and Diversity Forumwith the School for Social and Environmental Justiceproposes this cultural and awareness leap. Eighty people from every part and discipline and two years and more of work to build a tool, a text, 27 micro-videos, a single video that collects them, which gives strength and direction to what many and many are already trying to do . Which allows us to understand how the territorial vocation of contemporary arts and artistic practices can combine with democratic movements and challenge hegemonic common sense.
The curators of the work. The final work”Art in the contest for common sense”was edited by Fabrizio Barca and Alessia Zabatino, while the video part was the work of Caterina Grizzo. The document accompanied by microclips and the related video will be launched on December 1st during the Passage Festival promoted by Giorgio and Lilli Devoto Foundationwith the institutional support of the Municipality of Genoa, the Municipality of Bogliasco and the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo in Genoa.
