In Mexico, a preliminary estimate of 31,062 homicides were recorded in 2023, a figure lower than the 33,287 reported in 2022, which was slowly declining from a peak of 36,685 in 2018, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the preliminary homicide report from January to December 2023, prepared by the institute, two out of five victims of accidental deaths and intentional murders were between 20 and 34 years old. Inegi data show a decrease compared to 2022, but highlight that Mexico has been exceeding 30 thousand cases per year for seven years. The historical series of homicides recorded from 1990 to 2023 presented by the institute shows that in 2023 the number of murders was the lowest since 2016, when 24 thousand 559 were reported, and as of 2017 it exceeded 30 thousand.
According to the report, in the first five years of Felipe Calderón’s government, an average of 19,129 homicides were committed, while under Enrique Peña Nieto there were 24,095, and in five years of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government the average was 34,697. On a national scale, in 2023 the rate was 24 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, which is lower than in 2022, which was 25.9.
The number of homicides in Mexico fell last year, but more and more are committed with firearms; according to Inegi, 70 percent of those committed in 2023 were with firearms (21,507), compared to 67.6 percent in 2022. The use of knives followed, with 9.5 percent, and hanging, strangulation and suffocation, with 7 percent.
By gender, the rate in 2023 was 43.1 homicides per 100,000 men; in the case of women, it was 5.4 per 100,000, with Guanajuato reporting the highest number, with 3,746, followed by Baja California, 2,642, and Chihuahua, 2,396. Yucatán, Baja California Sur, and Durango had the lowest numbers, with 52, 47, and 89, respectively.
Occupation, level of education
According to Inegi statistics, the number of homicides of young people between 25 and 29 years old was 4,694 in 2023; while 4,504 were between 30 and 34 and 3,980 were between 20 and 24, with 42 percent of homicides predominating among young people.
Only 45 murders were recorded among adults aged 85 and older. Among children under one year of age, 33 cases were recorded, and among children between one and four years of age, 75.
As for the level of education, homicide deaths of people with secondary education or equivalent amounted to 8,639 last year; among those who had completed primary school, 5,781 were reported; high school, 3,525; among those with postgraduate education, 81.
Of the 31,000 homicides recorded, nearly 21,764 victims were employed. Among those who reported a record last year were street vendors, job seekers, or officials and high-ranking authorities in the public, private, and social sectors.
