Mexico City., With the start of the Extraordinary Electoral Process of the Judiciary 2024-2025, next Monday, the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) will form the Temporary Commission in charge of organizing the election of judges, magistrates and ministers. For its integration, in the draft agreement that will be discussed that day, the councilors Jorge Montaño (as president) and the councilors Norma de la Cruz and Rita Bell López are proposed.
The aforementioned commission will be in charge of monitoring the creation and approval of the comprehensive plan and electoral calendar to comply with the organization and development of activities, as well as budget planning and proposing the modifications required to the regulations and guidelines for holding elections.
The judicial reform, published on September 15, provides that the preparation stage for the extraordinary election of 2025 will begin with the first session of the General Council of the INE within seven days after the decree comes into force; which will take place this Monday, September 23. The duration of the campaigns will be 60 days and the election day will be held on the first Sunday of June 2025.
It establishes that the INE will be the body that will carry out the election calculations, publish the results and deliver certificates of majority to the candidates that obtain the greatest number of votes.
It will also declare the validity of the corresponding election and send its results to the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation or to the plenary session of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation in the case of electoral magistrates, who will resolve the challenges no later than August 28, 2025.
The decree also provides that the General Council of the INE may issue the agreements it deems necessary for the organization, development, computation, monitoring and oversight of the extraordinary electoral process 2024-2025.
