Mexico’s 2025 Judicial Elections: INE Secures Budget for Historic vote
Mexico is gearing up for a historic milestone in its democratic process. For the first time, citizens will directly elect members of the Judicial Branch, including judges, magistrates, and ministers, on June 1, 2025. The National Electoral Institute (INE) has announced notable preparations for this groundbreaking event, including the installation of 84,000 voting centers and the printing of over 600 million electoral tickets.
The INE’s president, Guadalupe Taddei, confirmed that the agency has secured an 800 million peso budget expansion from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). This funding will ensure the logistical framework for the elections is in place. “Everything is already in the Treasury, ther is the process ready. nothing else is generating the structure that has to be generated by disposal of the Treasury,” Taddei stated during a media briefing. she added, “A portal opens, you enter, captures, and when that is completed they already ask for the data.”
While the INE had initially requested 1,511 million pesos, the approved 800 million pesos will cover the installation of 84,000 sectional boxes across the country. This allocation is critical for ensuring the smooth operation of the elections, which will include six seperate votes for positions within the Supreme Court, the Electoral Court, and the newly established Judicial Discipline Court.
The push for these elections follows the constitutional reform to the Judiciary, enacted on September 15, 2023. President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of defining the rules for this unprecedented process. On January 15, she urged the INE to finalize the guidelines “as soon as possible,” highlighting the need for clarity and fairness in the electoral process.
