INE declares it “impossible” to endorse the legality of the re-election of ‘Alito’ Moreno

Mexico City. In a split vote of seven votes to four, the general council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) declared “the impossibility” of ruling on the verification of compliance and legality of the statutory changes of the PRI, so it leaves the in-depth analysis in the hands of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), in order to decide definitively whether Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, alias Alito may continue as national leader.

This afternoon’s INE resolution states that the tricolor party failed to comply with the provisions of Article 34 of the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures, that is, it made changes to its statutes during the electoral process, which is prohibited for all political parties, so they did not act in a timely manner, so the changes made to their basic documents were not analyzed.

In a virtual public session, councilors Arturo Castillo, Uuc-kib Espadas, Martín Faz, Dania Ravel, Rita Bell López, Jaime Rivera and Claudia Zavala voted in favor of the project, in the sense that they cannot comment on the changes to the statutes, because they were simply made during the electoral process, which is not permitted.

The president of the council, Guadalupe Taddei, Norma Cruz, Carla Humphrey and Jorge Montaño, were against this decision, as they considered that Article 34 had not been breached.

The advisor and president of the Commission on Prerogatives and Political Parties, Dania Ravel, explained that the INE cannot comment on the validity of the PRI statutes, since the modifications were made before the 2024 electoral process had been completed.

In contrast, the president of the council pointed out that the changes to the statutes had been made in a timely manner because the preparations and organization for the election day had already been completed.

However, this argument was not valid for the seven councilors who voted to declare the changes to the statutes inadmissible, which renders Alito’s reelection ineffective.

Therefore, it will be the TEPJF that will definitively decide whether the modifications to its statutes are legal and therefore define whether they are valid or not.
