Industry meets design – with a difference – mnews – medianet.at

GRAZ. Plastic does not enjoy a good reputation when it comes to protecting the environment and the climate. Unfortunately completely wrong. What makes plastic problematic is its incorrect disposal. In fact, the material can be 100% recycled and processed into countless products. Designmont Graz 2021 is dedicated to the topic of recycling and ecology in three exhibitions:

Fantastic Plastic

  1. May – June 6th (opening May 7th, 6 p.m.) | former Stiefelkönig, Herrengasse 26

At the same time as the Design Month Graz 2021, the “Fantastic Plastic” exhibition will open in the “Spitzhaus” in Herrengasse. The circular economy is the focus of this show, curated by the “Moscow Design Museum” in cooperation with Creative Industries Styria (CIS). 70 objects from 30 European design studios inspire with a wide variety of approaches. This also includes children’s furniture by EcoBirdy, “Freitag” bags, fashion by Galina Larina and the “Linz stool” by Thomas Feichtner. The show creates awareness of the value of plastic as a raw material. The unlimited creative possibilities of the reusable resource are shown.

This year’s program focus of the Design Month Graz – “Redesign the Future” – is impressively implemented here in concrete design contributions for a better future. The concept for “Fantastic Plastic” was developed by the Moscow Design Museum (MDM), which was founded in 2012 and is the first museum in Russia that is exclusively dedicated to the subject of design.

Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

SUREAL. Sustainable Responsive Art Lab

  1. – May 28th (opening May 8th, 6:00 p.m.) | designforum Steiermark, Andreas-Hofer-Platz

The exhibition in the designforum Steiermark offers insights into the design process of the newly built Merkur Campus, the international headquarters of Merkur Versicherungs AG in Graz. Both the design concept of the SelfSightSeeingCompany (Itse Petz & Io Tondolo) and its implementation were determined by the concept of sustainability. It is a remarkable example of an art and business collaboration. In the exhibition “SUREAL. Sustainable Responsive Art Lab ”, the designforum Steiermark presents the innovative results of this collaboration.

For Merkur Versicherung, a customer center, the lobby with a café, 20 think tanks, terrace areas and a fitness studio with boutique and spa areas were designed in the sport-historical context of the insurance company on over 10,000m2 of office and conference floors. Using selected design examples, the show demonstrates the approach of the artist duo and conveys the effectiveness of an interplay between business, art, architecture and people in the context of sustainable thought and creative processes.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

4th Block

  1. May – June 6th (opening May 8th, 6:00 p.m.) | Contipark Garage, Andreas-Hofer-Platz

The Contipark garage at Andreas-Hofer-Platz becomes a stage for poster design. The international triennial “4th Block” is a poster exhibition that shows the latest trends and innovations with an ecological message or connotation in modern poster design and other visual arts. The focus is on designers, printers and artists who are ecologically committed. The most important works in this context are shown worldwide in the exhibition – a platform for the global design community on the subject of ecology.

4th Block was founded by Oleg Veklenko as a result of his experiences as a relief worker after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. One of the driving forces behind the collective “4th Block”, which is responsible for the poster festival, is Illya Pavlov. He is currently a senior lecturer at the FH Joanneum and brings the poster show to us as part of the Graz Design Month. In recent years exhibitions have taken place all over the world, for example in Canada, London, Istanbul and Berlin.

The opening of the Design Month Graz 2021, which is being organized by Creative Industries Styria, will take place online on May 7th at 6:00 pm. The exhibition in the designforum Steiermark will also open online on May 8th at 6:00 p.m.
