Industrial plan of the FS Italiane Group 2022-2031

Rome, May 16, 2022

A long-term strategic and industrial vision supported by an investment plan from beyond 190 billion in the next ten years. The Industrial Plan 2022-2031 of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, which also envisages a profound redefinition of governance and a new organizational structure, was presented today in Rome by the President of FS Italiane, Nicoletta Giadrossi, and by the Chief Executive Officer, Luigi Ferraris.

The Ten Year Plan aims to give certainty of execution the infrastructural works on schedule; favor multimodal collective transport over private transport; increase rail freight transport up to double compared to 2019; making rail and road infrastructures more sustainable, accessible, effectively integrated and resilient, increasing their equipment also to reduce the gap between the north and south of the country; increase the degree of energy autonomy of the Group through renewable sources and contribute, also in this field, to the ecological transition.

In order to fully exploit the potential of all Group companies and make a decisive contribution to the sustainable development of the country marked by extraordinary events such as the pandemic and international conflicts, the need has emerged to redefine governance and review the organizational structure in four business poles, each with clear strategic objectives: “Infrastructure”, “Passengers”, “Logistics” and “Urban”.

The new organization aims to strengthen the synergies of all the companies operating in the Group and to increase their efficiency also in terms of planning and design. The international scenario and the geopolitical tensions that are causing growing inflation, the effects of the pandemic and those of climate change on infrastructures also contributed to outlining the new corporate restructuring, all combined with the awareness of the role that transport, logistics and infrastructures can perform for a sustainable development of the country.

Enabling factors of the 2022-2031 Business Plan, which will have to support its implementation, are innovation, digitization, connectivity and enhancement of the Group’s people.

Particular attention to the ecological transitionwith activities to improve efficiency and reduce consumption, combined with new initiatives to enhance its assets by installing plants for the production of electricity from renewable sources, to ensure coverage of at least 40% of the Group’s needs.

On an international level, the FS Group wants to guarantee a single control over the activity, aiming to generate further value in the countries where it is already present: France, Spain, Germany, Greece, Holland and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, at an extra-European level, Ferrovie dello Stato aims to export integrated know-how also through partnerships.

The FS Group’s revenues in 2031 are expected to grow to around 22.5 billion euros and EBITDA to 3.9 billion, with an average annual growth (CAGR), over the plan period, of 6.9 respectively % and 8.2%.

“The 2022-2031 Business Plan intends to accelerate investments and, with a long-term vision, give greater certainty to the execution of the works on schedule. We work to make our infrastructures increasingly modern, interconnected and resilient and mobility services tailored to the different needs of our customers. We intend to promote multimodal collective transport, and more sustainable also in the urban environment, double the share of freight transport by rail, contribute to the ecological transition not only by making the use of the train more attractive, the most ecological means par excellence, but also by self-producing from renewable sources at least 40% of our substantial energy needs. The Plan provides for the hiring of 40 thousand people over its time span and sees people as its main enabling factor, together with innovation, digital transformation and connectivity. A New Time is beginning for us all and I am sure that our people, today as yesterday, will be able to transform this plan into reality, showing themselves up to the challenges that await us ” he has declared Luigi FerrarisCEO of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group.
