Industrial Bakeries Resume Production After Trade Unions FNV and CNV Call Off Strikes, But Local Bakeries May Still be Affected

Trade unions FNV and CNV have called off strikes at three industrial bakeries. This means that supermarkets such as Albert Heijn are no longer affected by bread shortages. But local bakers may be screwed.

Employees of Bakkerij Borgesius and Dutch Bakery would stop work for 48 hours from Thursday morning to reinforce their demands for higher wages.

Just before those actions, employers in the sector offered 16 percent more wages and the unions are satisfied with that. Members of the FNV and CNV can now express their views on that offer.

Lovers of bread at the local bakery may be out of luck. The result of the negotiations only applies to the industrial bakers and not to their traditional counterparts. Most of the 51,000 employees in the sector work there. There is therefore still a threat of strikes. “It is only to be hoped that they agree with this result,” reports the CNV.
