President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) spoke up about the news that Indonesia was said to be joining a trade alliance BRICS. What did Jokowi say?
“It will be decided later,” Jokowi said briefly at the Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area, Jakarta, Monday (7/8/2023). Jokowi answered the question whether Indonesia would join the BRICS.
For information, there are rumors that Indonesia will join the BRICS. According to information circulating, Indonesia will register an alliance that will be joined by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (South Africa) along with 12 other countries. These countries include Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, Mexico and Argentina.
The BRICS economy comprises more than 40% of the world’s population and nearly a quarter of global gross domestic product. The BRICS has so far had a big agenda in countering Western influence. The alliance is said to be establishing a new currency to counter the US dollar which dominates global trade.
The BRICS will also hold a summit at the end of August in South Africa. At the summit, issues related to new members are likely to be discussed.
