Indonesia’s food regulator has confirmed the safety of a popular product from one of the world’s biggest instant noodle brands, despite its recall in Malaysia and Taiwan’s capital. The recalled product, “special chicken” flavour Indomie, is a popular Indonesian instant noodle variety produced by Indofood CBP. The Taipei city health department found traces of ethylene oxide, a possible carcinogenic ingredient. However, Indonesia’s food and drugs agency (BPOM) says that the product available in Indonesia meets safety standards. Indofood CBP, which has more than 20 production facilities worldwide, declined to comment on the recall. Overseas sales of Indofood CBP products contributed to 29% of its total sales last year. Ethylene oxide is a toxic gas mainly used to sterilize medical equipment and spices. The recall of Indomie has caused concern among some consumers, but BPOM assures that the product is safe for consumption.
